New Deep-Water Terminal, Stornoway Port
Stornoway Port has become the only port in the north-west of Scotland capable of hosting large cruise ships up to 360 metres long, marking a significant milestone for the region’s tourism and energy sectors.
This development opens up the islands as a key stop on UK cruise itineraries. The new terminal, part of a multi-millionpound project, also features a ferry berth, a new platform area, a heavy lift slab and a haul route to the Arnish fabrication yard.
BMES was awarded the contract for Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) Services by the Main Contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd. The deep-water terminal, which began construction in 2023, provides critical facilities for various sectors, including energy and transport. In addition to accommodating the largest cruise liners, the terminal is equipped to support vessels related to onshore and offshore wind farms and other energy sector activities.
During the preconstruction phase, BMES maximised build quality and efficiency by identifying and addressing any areas requiring special focus in collaboration with the project construction and design teams. A smart construction methodology was implemented to accelerate production, reducing both time on-site and preliminary costs. These build control measures ensured the project was delivered to a high quality and on time.
“We deployed an experienced blend of management and site operatives with proven track records to deliver this project,” said Allan Logan, Contracts Director at BMES. “The technical expertise of our staff played a major role in ensuring we delivered excellent value throughout.”
The terminal successfully welcomed its first cruise ship, the 216-metre Ambition, on 1 April 2024. This event marks a significant achievement for the Stornoway Port Authority and a major step forward for the region’s maritime infrastructure.
