Italian Consulate, Edinburgh

Oct 13, 2025

BMES Scotland recently completed the mechanical installation for the refurbishment of the new Italian Consulate in Edinburgh, acting as the mechanical subcontractor for RSP Consulting Engineers LLP on this high-profile project.

The works involved a careful balance of upgrading existing infrastructure while integrating modern, energy-efficient systems throughout the building. BMES carried out enhancements to the existing air conditioning system and upgraded the Building Management System (BMS) controls to improve functionality and performance.

New high-efficiency boilers were installed, along with radiators across all four floors to ensure consistent and reliable heating. BMES also delivered new toilet facilities, including updated plumbing and drainage systems in line with current standards.

A key feature of the installation was a new mechanical ventilation system, supported by a roof-mounted Air Handling Unit (AHU) on the second floor, delivering improved indoor air quality throughout the building.

Working within a historic property presented unique challenges. BMES collaborated closely with Insite and the wider project team to coordinate installation works, maintain programme requirements, and ensure a seamless integration of new services within the existing structure.

The project was completed on time and to a high standard, providing the Italian Consulate with a modern, efficient, and future-proof working environment.
