Replacement of Switchboard, University of Edinburgh
The Christina Miller Building at Edinburgh University, named after the pioneering Scottish chemist, is located within the prestigious King’s Buildings Campus and is home to advanced research and teaching laboratories. BMES was appointed as the Main Contractor to replace the main switchboard in this notable building.
A key aspect of the project was to ensure minimal disruption to students and staff, allowing the building to remain operational throughout the work. Leveraging the expertise of our team, BMES designed and constructed a new 1200A switchboard to replace the existing incoming switchgear. To maintain functionality in the critical research departments and teaching labs, a temporary power supply was implemented during the project.
The scope of work included internal demolition, alterations to cable containment and the removal of the old switchgear. BMES also relocated existing sub mains, constructed a new switch room wall with an access door, and installed new lighting and power systems in the switch room. The room was then fully decorated, ensuring it was ready for immediate use.
The project was completed on time and within budget. Upon completion, BMES provided the client with a set of detailed drawings and maintenance manuals for the newly updated electrical infrastructure.
